STARMAD @ AIAA-SPACE2008
Legnano, Italy - Sep 12, 2008 - Event: AIAA Space Conference 2008
Paper Title: "Space Systems Engineering Technology Improvements using STARMAD (Space Tool for Advanced & Rapid Mission Analysis & Design) in the Design Process of a Space Mission".

INTRODUCTION
Space has proven to be the silent backbone underpinning commercial, civil, and military sectors. Three of the top issues - economic competitiveness, the global war on terror, and the need for increased global climate change monitoring - are all dependent on technological and operational achievements in space.
The AIAA SPACE 2008 Conference & Exposition reflected on these issues and more, while providing direction for future actions.

BACKGROUND
AIAA SPACE 2008 provided researchers, developers, and management from government, industry, and academia an opportunity to reflect upon the progress over the past decade, and debate how to best focus the great talent and resources of the space community on the future. Invited speakers and panelists provided a unique perspective on key issues, setting the stage for continuing discussion throughout the program. This conference offered both a top-down and bottom-up perspective on interdisciplinary capabilities and space systems.
AIAA SPACE 2008 was organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, co-chaired by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, sponsored by Orbital Sciences Corporation, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Raytheon, and ATK, and supported by, The Aerospace Corporation, The United Space Alliance, the American Astronautical Society, Jacobs Engineering Group Inc, ITT Corporation, Stellar Solutions, AIAA Technical Activities Committee (TAC) Space & Missiles Group, California Space Authority, Space News, and Aerospace America.

TOPICS
This event has been attended by leaders from all elements of the space community, including key government and business decision makers, providing an unparalleled forum for exchange and dialogue. Topics of discussion included all aspects of space systems and technologies. The program was structured around nine technical tracks:
